Nr. 3: Thonet chair 209

Manon's chair

‘This elegant classic is a masterpiece of construction and finish that invites you to take a seat.’

Manon Schaap (1962, Hilversum) is the director of the Amsterdam Museum of Bags and Purses. Boasting a multi-faceted career as an independent creative director for international fashion and design publications and high-end retail and long-term cooperation with, among others, trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort, she now runs both the creative and the business side of the museum. The Amsterdam Museum of Bags and Purses is located on Herengracht 573. The building is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Canal Belt and attracts around 70,000 visitors a year. Manon sits in Thonet Chair 209, designed in 1900 by the Thonet brothers. This is a vintage copy that is owned by Manon Schaap herself. A nice detail of this design is that the back and armrests of this chair consist of one piece of curved solid beech wood.
